It has been noted that some dog breeds are an easier target for allergies than others. Some of the reasons attributed to this condition include smaller nasal tracts, allergic reaction to their own hair and adverse reactions to flea bites. Some of the breeds which have been noted to have allergic reactions are the terrier, retrievers, beagles, setters, and boxers. These are just some common examples, although any dog, of any breed may be susceptible to an allergic reaction at some point.

But how would you know if you your dog is suffering from an allergic reaction? The symptoms to watch out for include diarrhea, vomiting, recurrent chewing and licking of the paws, scratching excessively, watery eyes and sneezing. The symptoms may only show temporarily, or on and off, in any case the pet owner is advised to consult his veterinarian for probable causes. It is important to identify what the cause of the allergy is, in order to treat it. Your vet may suggest a substance, or a special collar that might quickly resolve the situation.

It is often noted in dogs suffering from an allergic reaction that their mood will change, usually to a more aggressive one. Trying to enforce discipline on a dog with an allergic reaction is most likely to be futile. For best results, it is best to identify the source of the allergic reaction in order to ask your vet for the most effective way to treat it. This means the pet owner will need to spend some time with his dog and generate a log of his daily activity, including what he eats and plants and animals he came in contact with.

As the dog gets older, he might develop breathing problems. This is a particular condition directly related to the age of the dog. There is not much you can do, but clean his bed often, groom him properly and perhaps invest in a Hepa filter that eliminates dust and pollens from the air, making it easier to breathe. Avoid going outside to play dog games when it is cold. This is especially true for smaller breeds, who are likely to get a cold and start having breathing problems.

In the event that your dog becomes infested by fleas, quickly proceed to bathe the dog with special dog shampoo. Some brands of shampoo especially made for dogs contain additives that kill fleas and their eggs. This project not only involves cleaning the dog’s coat, but your carpet and furniture as well. If the fleas have created an open wound in the dog, perhaps is better to wait and heal the wound before applying treatment.

Situations in which the dog has allergic reactions to his own hair are worse of all, since little can be done about it. Dogs suffering from this condition should be groomed often, brushed on a daily basis and taken to the veterinarian for regular checkups. In extreme cases, the vet may prescribe some sort of anti histamine in order to control the allergy attacks.
