What Car Insurance Companies Don t Want You to Know

When dealing with car insurance companies, it is important to make sure that you are self educating yourself. You have to make sure that you know everything there is to know about your rights, the obligations the car insurance companies have, and any legal loop holes there might be that could set you up for financial trouble if you are not aware of them.

Remember, your car insurance company is a business. They are in the business of making money, that s why you pay monthly premiums. In exchange for your money, they offer a certain amount of protection for you in the event of an accident involving a vehicle.

It is extremely vital to make sure that you understand that if a car insurance company can find a way to get out of paying for your medical or car repairs, they will find it. This is especially true when you are dealing with a company that is representing another driver. This is not to say that the car insurance companies are bad or untrustworthy, it is just how business is run. They know their rights and obligations, do you?

The first thing that you need to know is if you are ever involved in an accident, you have to get treatment right away. Even if you think the other driver is more at fault than you, it is important to seek medical treatment. There are many neck and back injuries that are not felt right away, especially when adrenaline is pumping through your body. Waiting for treatment until you find yourself in pain two weeks after the accident is not a good move. How can you prove that your pain is associated with the accident when you weren t hurt enough to go to the hospital?

Another thing that you want to remember is that your credit history, your driving history, and in some cases, the driving history of your friends will impact the amount that you are forced to pay in premiums. Credit reports are often pulled when car insurance companies are trying to determine what to charge you.

Get your credit in line and make sure that you are paying everything on time. And remember, you are not the only driver that the car insurance company looks at. If you allowed your friend or relative to borrow your car and they totaled it or even caused just enough damage that you had to file a claim, that is going to count against you as a driver and it will affect your future premium costs.

Another thing that many car insurance companies forget to mention is that you do not have to add your teenager to your insurance policy as soon as he or she hits the legal driving age. Legally, it is not until your teenager obtains a drivers license that you have to make changes to your policy.

When switching car insurance companies, make sure that you make a phone call or send a fax or letter to officially drop coverage. If you simply sign with another company and allow your other policy to drop for non payment, this could affect you negatively in the future. Cancellations for non payment, no matter your reason, can cause your future premium costs to increase.

Remember, the more you know about your rights and how the insurance game works, you will save money and frustration. Learn everything you can on your own because you cannot expect the insurance company to lay it all out for you.
