As a pianist, can you feel that you are making progress? The thing that gives you the motivation and encouragement is the feeling that you become better as time goes by. For you to be able to achieve something, let’s see how you are doing in your practice.

There are things that will aid you in reaching the dream to become a good pianist as you practice. But first, we have to know the things that will deter your progress.

1. You doubt on yourself to what kind of pianist you be in the future. You’ll have a hard time on selecting the correct exercises that will contribute to your progress. You will find it difficult to prioritize among the things that you are going to practice if you have not set your goals.

2. To commit your skills to become a long term memory is very important. But if you are not practicing well enough to accomplish all your assignments then you will get nowhere.

3. You are doing difficult pieces that you cannot handle in your level. It will surely deter you to become a better pianist since you are focusing on unrealistic goals. There is nothing wrong with having great musicians as an example, but put in mind that you are not yet at their level and you need to progress to play their pieces.

4. What may hinder you in making advancement is your hand posture. Demanding pieces are difficult to play plus having a bad hand and body posture, things will get more complicated!

5. You stick with a tempo that you cannot handle. If it is very fast and at your level you still cannot do it, then don’t push yourself. Just wait until you get it properly by not skipping the basics that is needed to learn.

6. You don’t have the heart for music. You practice when you just feel like doing it. If you go on like this, I advise you to quit playing since sooner or later, you’ll definitely lose interest.

7. You do not know how to play an entire piece. All you have learned are bits and pieces of the piano solos and some minute exercises.

Now, having mentioned all those negative things that hinders your progress, let’s see some ways on how to avoid them, making your learning easy and smooth:

1. Piano playing should not just be taken lightly, come to think of it more. Think about the main reason why you are playing piano, the things that you really love about the piano and what kind of piano player you want to be in the future. You need to set goals and get a hold of them in your lifetime in order to be a better performer.

In this manner, it won’t be that hard to analyze your progress as a pianist, if you have shown improvements or you have not. You’ll have a clearer picture on the path that you are taking and soon you’ll be able to create a wonderful music!

2. Practice is a very important aspect of becoming a better pianist. Do it very often and set your heart to it. Later on, you’ll see that your skills are more developed than before and it will aid you in learning more complicated exercises and piano playing styles. By practicing, you’ll be able to remember all the pieces for a long time.

3. Play according to your skill level. Do not be tempted to choose exercises that are far greater than your skills to play. That will be too much and it may cause you a lot of stress. Playing very hard pieces can also be a boring activity and will make you lose interest to the activity.

4. You will be assured that you are using your energy properly if you are following the good hand and body posture. Aside from that, piano playing will also become one of the most pleasurable experiences you’ll have for life!

5. Practice in a slow manner – this is a very efficient way of learning piano. It will make you avoid making a lot of errors that can develop into bad piano playing habits. It will also make you more relaxed which will lead to enjoyment and fun as well!

6. Learn to appreciate music. You can feel it within yourself. Music is what makes our world colorful. It is the language when everyone becomes speechless – the art of expression. In this way, you’ll have it in your heart and get to love what you are doing which is a very great thing!

7. Having compilations of different pieces and rehearsing them very well is so self rewarding and you can also entertain your friends and family with your good music. It is necessary to embrace the thought of learning many pieces when practicing. You will be the happiest upon knowing that you’ve made many people smile by sharing them your wonderful music!
